The short answer
What is a self-directed gold IRA and how does it work?
A self-directed gold IRA is an individual retirement account whose custodian permits eligible physical gold. You direct the investment, a qualifying custodian administers the account, a dealer supplies the metal and a depository stores it under the custody arrangement. The asset choices are broader; the IRA restrictions still apply.[1][2]

Who controls a self-directed IRA for gold?
You choose the investment; control over that choice is different from possession of the metal.
A dealer may coordinate paperwork, but it is worth identifying each legal party separately. Ask whose name is on the account agreement, who invoices the coins or bars, and which institution records the storage position. The custody responsibility guide explains the gaps a sales conversation can leave.
Start with the account’s legal structure if you have only used a conventional brokerage IRA. A broader investment menu is not a separate exemption from tax rules.
- The SEC warns that self-directed custodians administer assets without evaluating the investment’s legitimacy or the promoter’s claims.[3]

Can I buy gold through my IRA account?
Yes, but eligible coins or bullion and the custody arrangement must meet the IRA requirements.
Use the metal and account rule guide for those checks. If an arrangement involves an LLC or personal access, read the checkbook-control cautions before relying on a promoter’s explanation.
- Section 408(m) begins with a collectibles restriction and then provides limited coin and bullion exceptions. The bullion exception includes a trustee-possession condition.[2]
- The IRS also cautions that coins covered by its exception must be in the possession of the IRA custodian or trustee.[4]
Allowed in principle
- R1Direct an IRA purchase of qualifying metal through an acceptable custody arrangement.
- R2Check the exact product and storage terms before sending a buy instruction.
Not allowed as a shortcut
- R3Treat any gold object or collectible as eligible merely because it contains gold.
- R4Assume self-direction gives permission to keep IRA coins in your own safe.
Which companies can help with a metals purchase?
This publication compares two paid partners: Goldco first, as a paid placement, followed by Augusta Precious Metals.
This is a limited commercial selection, not a market-wide ranking or a test of their service. Neither a paid position nor a published opening threshold establishes that a company is suitable for you.

What could make a gold IRA a poor fit?
It can be a poor fit if you need investment income, easy access to cash or an arrangement requiring little administration.
A gold IRA is not right for everyone. Keeping a simpler account may suit the task better. Read the choice-versus-responsibility comparison, including why a custodian’s presence does not remove fraud risk.
- Gold can fall in price and pays no income. CFTC guidance notes that precious metals do not generate dividends or earnings growth.[5]
- Custody, storage and dealing charges can make physical metal cost more to hold than most funds. The SEC flags potentially higher fees in self-directed accounts.[6]
Your document check
- Could you meet planned withdrawals without a forced metal sale?
- Have you compared the complete written costs with your existing account?
- Can you explain who has possession and who checks the investment?
- Would the arrangement still make sense without a promotional offer?
How do you move from reading to an account decision?
Confirm the account type and custody documents first, then choose a funding route and consider the metal order.
The opening sequence and paperwork list walks through that order. A Roth tax structure and an owner-only business plan have separate eligibility and tax questions; they are not interchangeable labels.
Transactions involving your own property or personal benefit need special attention. IRS Publication 590-B lists prohibited uses that can undo the intended IRA treatment.[7]
What else do readers ask?
Can I buy gold through my IRA account?
An IRA can buy certain eligible coins and bullion under the exceptions in section 408(m). The exact metal and custody arrangement matter; not all gold products qualify. [2]
Can I keep the gold at home?
Do not treat a home safe as IRA storage. IRS Publication 590-B says the eligible coins must be in the possession of the IRA custodian or trustee. [4]
Is a self-directed gold IRA right for everyone?
No. It adds asset-selection work, costs and price risk. Gold does not pay income, and a simpler retirement account may better fit your needs. [5]
